How to Whiten Teeth in Photoshop

Written by Ask Chris Holdren

I am all about saving time when it comes to digital photo retouching. When your doing work for clients and making edits based on their feedback, things can get a little out of hand. Especially when you are 50 layers deep.

Thats why todays tutorial is great. It delivers great results and gets the job done fast. So lets jump into how I whiten teeth in photoshop.

Whiten Teeth Step by Step:

  1. Open Image in Photoshop.
  2. Create a Hue / Saturation layer and clip it to your image.
  3. Click on the Master preset drop down and select yellow.
  4. Slide the middle saturation slider all the way to the left.
  5. Slide the lightness slider all the way to the right.
  6. Click on Hue / Saturation layer mask and invert it. You do that by clicking control or command I on the keyboard depending upon if you use mac or windows.
  7. Grab a paint brush with the white color selected and start painting on his teeth.

Since black conceals and white reveals when it comes to masks. When you paint white on the mask, only the areas you brush will show the Hue / Saturation layer. So when you paint on the teeth the adjustments you made are now visible.

And thats pretty much it for this technique. Some people paint white on the teeth and adjust the blending modes. Others create multiple layers and use blend if to whiten teeth. But I have found that this works on 99% of the images I work on. Its simple. Add an adjustment layer. Move the sliders. Then adjust the opacity to your liking.
